In a parliamentary answer on 30 October, Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride declined to give a “categorical assurance” that the means testing of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) would not form part of the Chancellor’s 17 November Autumn Statement.
However, on 14 November, Marsha De Cordova, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, again pressed whether there were plans to means test DLA and PIP.
Responding for the Department of Work and Pensions, Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work Tom Pursglove said: “We have no plans to means test DLA and PIP. Both DLA and PIP are intended to act as a contribution towards the extra costs that arise as a result of a long-term health condition, or disability, and have been non-means tested since they were introduced.”
