A new Citizens Advice Scotland report “Voices from the Frontline... The Bedroom Tax and disabled people” shows that, in Scotland, 65,600 households affected by the bedroom tax have at least one person who is disabled living in them.

Analysis of Citizens Advice Bedroom Tax clients shows that:

  • Two thirds are disabled
  • A further 1 in 10 are caring for a disabled person
  • The majority are aged between 45 and 60, live alone and are too sick to work
  • Only 13% were in employment
  • 1 in 9 are single parents

In a recent case a tribunal judge in Glasgow ruled that imposing the bedroom tax on a disabled woman was a breach of human rights on grounds of discrimination. However, as the Citizens Advice figures show, many disabled people are still facing harm as a result of loss of income because the Government refuses to change the law.
