22 March 2020 | News
The Minister for Disabled People Justin Tomlinson has said that the DWP “does not make offers” to some PIP and ESA claimants who are awaiting appeals.
However, in a contradictory remark he also said decisions are confirmed only “if the claimant agrees” on the telephone.

DWP has sent 150,000 fit for work letters that risk patients' health
29 April 2019 | News
The DWP has issued around 150,000 copies of a controversial 'fit for work' letter that doctors warn could endanger patients' health, according to the Mirror.
When someone is found’ fit for work’ following a work capability assessment, the DWP sends their GP a standard letter (ESA65B) informing them of the decision. The wording of this letter changed in August 2017 to say GPs "do not need to provide any more fit notes" to their patient - even though these are needed to keep claiming ESA during an appeal.
Record 1.6 million food bank parcels given out in past year
25 April 2019 | News
April 2018 to March 2019 has been the busiest year for food banks in its history, according the Tressell Trust.
During the past year, 1,583,668 three-day emergency food supplies were given to people in crisis in the UK - an 18.8% increase on the previous year.
The number of food parcels given out across UK has now soared by 73% in the last five years.
The Trust says that the main reasons for people needing emergency food are benefits consistently not covering the cost of living (33%), and delays or changes to benefits being paid.

Work and Pensions - Fifth Report Benefit sanctions policy beyond the Oakley Review
The Work and Pensions Committee has called for a full independent review to investigate whether benefit sanctions are being applied appropriately, fairly and proportionately, across the Jobcentre Plus (JCP) network.
Disability Rights UK welcomes the committee’s finding that “there is no evidence on whether the application or deterrent threat of a sanction makes it more or less likely that a claimant will engage with employment support or gain work.”
