Government advisor Professor Tom Burns says Community Treatment Orders 'don't work' and are unnecessary

This is what people with lived experience of mental health problems have been saying from the outset. Right now we have ever growing use of compulsory treatment [see our blog Choice and control – or co-ercion?] yet when those of us with mental health problems experience crises we are turned away from services. The way to avoid crises in mental health is NOT more compulsion but good support planning, with peer support from others who have travelled a similar path. We are disabled people leading change - and we believe that if we have more say as citizens, and more influence over the services we need, we will contribute more to society and have fewer crises. It is time to scrap psychiatric asbos.
