As part of Disability History Month, our blogs today look back at the experiences of disabled people in institutions.

Institutions have long been a feature of the ‘care’ of disabled people, and it is only in very recent times that they have been come to be viewed negatively. These two pieces tell very different stories, but they show clearly why we at Disability Rights UK believe that institutionalisation must end, and that care and support must be delivered in a way that promotes independence and the rights of the individual.
