Personal message from Kamran Mallick, CEO DR UK

"I am delighted to announce that Fazilet Hadi, our Head of Policy at Disability Rights UK, has been awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours List. Her combination of warmth and incisive grasp of disability rights is impressive and has helped to build DR UK’s strong policy reputation."

A Career Rooted in Justice and Advocacy

Fazilet began her professional journey in the legal field working as a solicitor. Her passion for justice and equality led her to use her legal expertise to support and advocate for those who faced systemic barriers and discrimination. She worked for a community law centre in Birmingham and progressed to a senior role at the law centre in Brighton. In 1990 she moved to local government, rising to Head of Equalities at Lewisham Council. Fazilet joined Royal National Institute of Blind people (RNIB) as Director of Policy in 1997. She worked there for 21 years and when she left was Deputy Chief Executive.

Fazilet combines her role at DR UK with an NHS Non-Executive director role at Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust. She has held many board positions for national charities such as NCVO and organisations advocating for blind and visually impaired people.

Leading Policy at Disability Rights UK

In 2020, Fazilet joined us as Head of Policy, bringing her wealth of experience and her unparalleled passion for justice and human rights for all Disabled people. Her role has been pivotal in shaping the organisation’s strategic policy direction and approach. This has enabled DR UK to amplify the voices of Disabled people at the highest levels of policymaking.

At Disability Rights UK, Fazilet has been key to our work to challenge inequality and our aspiration that Disabled people must have an equal say in shaping the policies and services that affect our lives.

Fazilet’s ability to navigate the complex intersection of policy, lived experience, and advocacy is instrumental in our campaigning and influencing work.

Whether advocating for stronger disability rights legislation, pushing for accessible infrastructure, or highlighting the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Disabled people, Fazilet’s voice has been a beacon of clarity and conviction.

A Well-Deserved Honour

The award of an MBE is a fitting recognition of Fazilet’s remarkable contribution over many years. This honour not only celebrates her personal achievements but also highlights the broader importance of disability rights and the tireless efforts of Disabled people to create a more equitable society.

Fazilet’s MBE is a testament to the power of lived experience in leadership. As a Disabled person herself, Fazilet brings authenticity, insight, and empathy to her work. Her ability to connect with others, whether through policymaking, advocacy, or public speaking, is deeply rooted in her own experiences and her unwavering belief in the potential of all Disabled people.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Fazilet’s achievements serve as an inspiration to many. Her journey demonstrates that with passion, perseverance, and a commitment to justice, it is possible to break down barriers and create lasting change.

At Disability Rights UK, we are fortunate to have Fazilet as a colleague, mentor, and leader. Her dedication to our mission and her tireless efforts to champion the rights of Disabled people inspire all of us to strive for a society where everyone is valued and included.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate Fazilet’s MBE, we also recognise the ongoing challenges faced by Disabled people across the UK. Fazilet’s work reminds us that the fight for equality and inclusion is far from over. Her leadership and vision continue to guide Disability Rights UK as we advocate for policies and practices that uphold the rights of Disabled people and ensure our voices are heard.

Fazilet, I am incredibly proud of you and all that you have accomplished. I am lucky and privileged that I have got to work alongside you since you joined DR UK. I learn from you every day. Congratulations, Fazilet on this well-deserved honour. Your impact is immeasurable, and your legacy will continue to shape the future for Disabled people for years to come.
