Disabled hotel residents moved out for Beyonce fans
Collette Collington has twin autistic sons and told the paper that the move is impacting her mental health and will be “very distressing” for her sons who need stability and routine to accommodate their autism.
The paper also reports that the Council had failed to extend her stay at the hotel, resulting in her waiting in the lobby with all of her possessions until they could arrange another room for her.
The paper also spoke to Piotr Rembikowski, who lost his rented accommodation in a fire. Piotr is a wheelchair user and has been living with his family in the hotel since last August, way beyond the six week limit.
The Council acknowledged that hotel accommodation is “not ideal”.
DR UK’s Head of Policy Fazilet Hadi said: “The housing crisis in the UK is out of control. There is a shortage of accommodation across the board, but especially so for accessible accommodation for Disabled people. It is horrific that Disabled people are given no housing and emotional security with these arrangements, moved from room to room for weeks on end. This is no start to life for young Disabled children, and humiliating and debilitating for Disabled adults. The Government needs to work hard and fast to end this deeply distressing state of affairs.”
