Often as part of our work we are asked for step by step guides on how to ‘do’ co-production, and it can be difficult to explain why this is not always possible. One way of thinking about co-production is to think of it like baking a cake.
There are different ingredients (the people involved, their experiences/knowledge and the joint values) and different methods (the way you make the cake and the skills/facilities needed). The mix of different ingredients and the method used changes the final output (or cake!) you have in the end. You could get a red velvet, chocolate, or a vanilla cake.
The way co-production works is dependent on each project/service and looks different each time, which is why a step by step guide is not possible.
