Around four in ten Disabled people are cutting back on food and essentials, latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggests. The ONS survey revealed that 42% of Disabled people have made such cuts, compared to 31% of non-disabled people.
Overall, around 24 million people in Great Britain reduced energy use in their home between March and June 2022, and around 16 million cut back on food and essentials.
Fazilet Hadi, Head of Policy at Disability Rights UK said “ Yet again, research shows that Disabled people are being disproportionately impacted by the cost of living crisis. The gap between the experience of Disabled people and non-disabled people is huge.
Government needs to take urgent action to increase benefits in line with inflation, provide targeted financial support to Disabled people and stop care charges and other deductions from benefits.”
