A new report disclosing how the judiciary reflects society has been published by the government.
Across all legal exercises, candidates with a disability represented 8% of applications and 7% of all recommendations made. Disabled people had a similar recommendation rate from application as candidates without a disability (11%).
DR UK’s Head of Policy Fazilet Hadi said: "This is a good first step. But monitoring appointments is only part of the picture. We need to see monitoring data on existing judges to understand the extent to which the judiciary needs to change to truly represent the people it serves."
The report, commissioned by the Judicial Diversity Forum, is the first of its kind to bring together data on the diversity of the judiciary and judicial appointments, and from the relevant legal professions (solicitors, barristers and legal executives) to provide a picture of the current state of the judiciary, and also the process by which judges are recruited and the diversity of the pool from which much of the judiciary is drawn – the legal professions.
