Commenting on the John Harris article in The Guardian about residential care, DR UK's CEO Kamran Mallick said: "DR UK raised the detention and treatment of learning disabled people and people in the mental health system as part of the civil society report to the UN committee reviewing the UK’s implementation of the Convention Against torture. John Harris’s article states that people have received treatment akin to torture. Actually detaining disabled people miles from their community in cell-like rooms, subject to segregation, ill treatment and bad practice in restraint should be called out for what it is – torture – and contrary to both the Convention Against Torture and the Convention on the rights of People with Disabilities."
