Today the Government is introducing provisions which will give more protection for disabled people using taxi and private hire services.
Under the Equality Act drivers of what are termed Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs) will be liable for a fine of up to £1,000 if they refuse to carry the passenger in their chair, fail (unless they have an official exemption) to provide assistance such as deploying the ramp and helping to push them into the vehicle, or charge extra for carrying a passenger who uses a wheelchair.
This is a new blog about the changes by Will Bee, Chair, Local Transport Group Disabled Person’s Transport Advisory Committee.
