This Extra Costs Commission report marks the end of a year-long independent inquiry into the extra costs faced by disabled people and their families

Driving down the costs disabled people face

It calls on disabled people to:

  • be ‘bold and loud’ and build consumer power behind the ‘purple pound’.
  • adopt the identity of disability positively to attract the interest of businesses.
  • share information about good deals and ways to reduce costs with other disabled people through online disability communities and forums.
  • demand more as consumers and speak out when companies or disability organisations do not fully meet their needs.

The report makes a number of recommendations for disability organisations, businesses, regulators and Government to help improve disabled people’s needs as consumers.
