The Work and Pensions Select Committee is holding a one-off oral evidence session with the Minister for Disabled People, Mark Harper MP, to discuss progress with the implementation of Personal Independence Payment.

Date/time: Wednesday 10 September at 9.30am

Location: Thatcher Room, Portcullis House

Witnesses:

Department for Work and Pensions

Mark Harper and Noel Shanahan

  • Mark Harper MP, Minister for Disabled People
  • Noel Shanahan, Director General, Operations

The purpose of the session is to assess DWP’s progress in addressing delays in the PIP claims process, since the previous Minister gave oral evidence in December 2013 and the Committee published recommendations on improving the service to claimants in March 2014.

The session considers:

  • Steps taken by DWP to improve its own processes, including resources devoted to clearing the backlog
  • Improvements made to the claims process, including Special Rules claims
  • Performance of assessment providers (Atos and Capita) and steps taken by DWP to address performance issues
  • Outcomes for claimants – numbers and types of payments awarded compared with projections
  • The timetable for and scope of the independent review of the PIP assessment and the likely impact on PIP implementation plans.
